The Barker Brothers have a kiln load of wares ready to fire. Come find out how a white hot fire and some table salt put the finish on the pottery.
Gather around the Barker Brothers Pottery Shop to watch how delicate clay pots transform into beautiful, durable wares using centuries-old techniques. Look past the flames as they swirl around the orange, glowing pots.
The kiln will be loaded the day prior, and the firing of the kiln will begin early in the morning before we open, and will continue through the day. The burn generally takes between 12-14 hours. The salting generally occurs between 2:30-3:30 p.m., which is the most dramatic part of the burn, with the fire reaching its hottest point of 2300 degrees Fahrenheit, and flames actually shoot out of the kilns chimney 5-6′.
