Folklore & Fairy Tales ~ Beyond the Fairy Dust ~ 5th Annual NICE Workshop 1
May 11, Discussion & Workshop 2-4:30pm
Logan Street Sanctuary, Inc.
$25 per person
Think all fairy tales are brightly-colored, light-hearted, and filled with Disney tunes? Think again! Join us from 2-4:30pm for an imaginative and creative workshop that’s part of our 2019 NICE project! Wearing your fairy-themed clothing to the workshops is encouraged! This year, our theme is Folklore and Fairy Tales ~ Beyond the Fairy Dust, and our passages come from these four folklore and fairy tales: The Story of Hunahpú and Xbalanqué (in Popul Vuh, trans. Ximénez, c. 1700-1715), The Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Anderson, 1836), The Ballad of Tam Lin (c. 1549), and Hansel and Gretel (The Brothers Grimm, 1812). We’re looking at these original folklore stories and fairy tales through a modern lens, to relate them to today’s world with fresh insights. Workshops also make time for and encourage people to create new art, in all mediums and genres, inspired the selected passages. All mediums & genres are welcome (writing, 2D art, 3D art, music/songwriting, etc). Bring your own artistic tools (paper, laptops, paints, etc) or use what we provide: this year, we’ll guide the creation of abstract art and provide 6×6 canvases and acrylic paints.

Second Saturday Showcase Series The Wallens in concert
May 11, 8-10pm
Logan Street Sanctuary, Inc.
$10 requested donation at the door
Every Second Saturday of the month at 8pm, we welcome diverse entertainers to the LSS stage! In May we welcome The Wallens!
The Wallens have brought their close-knit harmony vocals and storytelling to Australia, Europe, and across the US at events like the Telluride Blues Fest. Originally hailing from Kentucky, Molly is a classically-trained vocalist and percussionist with experience in opera and bluegrass alike.
Incorporating elements of blues, bluegrass, gospel, and folk, their combined influences range from acoustic favorites like the Civil Wars and John Prine to the guitar-driven blues of John Mayer. Whether at a house concert, festival, or brewpub, their foot-stomping energy brings a fresh dimension to roots music.

Cari Ray and The Shaky Legs in concert
May 31, 8-10:30pm (Doors open at 7pm)
Logan Street Sanctuary, Inc.
$15 requested donation at the door
Logan Street Sanctuary is always thrilled to welcome back to our stage the AMAZING Cari Ray and The Shaky Legs! Cari Ray is an award-winning songwriter and storyteller whose songs manifest in a way that can transport you a back alley juke joint around the early part of the last century. Cari’s influences as a writer and performer are clear and present in her original material, spanning a wide range of early American music… a helping of acoustic blues, a little folk, a rasher of ragtime, and a slight flavor of old-time country.. Her live show serves it up handily with quick wit, tasty fingerstyle guitar, and a huge voice. Add the powerful harmony vocals of percussionist and long-time collaborator, Dionne Ward, and you have Cari Ray & The Shaky Legs. With a unique blend of heart and grit, this power duo will have your heart breaking one minute and your hips shaking the next…all while wondering where they’re hiding the rest of band.
