Give your young performer the venue and encouragement to take the stage! Nickel Plate Arts, in collaboration with Storytelling Arts of Indiana, Legacy Keepers Music, and Noblesville Parks and Recreation, presents its 2016 Summer Performing Arts Camp July 25-29. During the one-week session, campers will take part in creative, engaging projects to explore:
Camp takes place at the Recreation Annex at Ivy Tech Community College (in partnership with Noblesville Parks & Rec) $195/camper for Noblesville residents; $225/camper for non-residents. Ages 8-12. Campers must bring their own sack lunches. Registration required. Register here.
Nickel Plate Arts is working with local musicians, storytellers and other partners to develop a sampling of performing arts topics with ties to the visual arts, too! In addition to our own “Miss K” (Kavita Singh), two of our instructors are Bob Sander of Storytelling Arts and artist/musician Janet Gilray.
Sander will instruct campers on how to “tell a lie” (tall tales) using technique, story development and originality right in time for the Annual Liar’s Contest at the Indiana State Fair. Sander, an Indianapolis native, has always had a love for storytelling and how it creates bridges to other cultures, doors to the past, and tools for understanding and relaying deeper ideas hidden in narratives. He will lead campers as they develop their own tall tales, colorful characters and unique settings, and spin their tales into “tall” versions.
Gilray will lead campers through a music lesson including the history of music, ranging from antique songs to what we hear today, and connecting kids to popular Indiana songs in time for the Bicentennial! Campers will discover how music and song-writing creates stories and memories, linking back to the stories they are developing with Sanders as part of the storytelling component. Kids will have the opportunity to sample a variety of instruments in Gilray’s “instrument petting zoo” including guitars, fiddles, dulcimers and more!
On the last day of camp, parents are invited to attend campers’ Performing Arts Showcase, July 29, 2-3 p.m.
Location: Ivy Tech Community College, Recreation Annex entrance, Gate 18. Ivy Tech Community College is located at 300 North 17th St., Noblesville.
Space is limited. Campers will bring their own sack lunches. Registration required. Register here.
